Manikaran is a beautiful  pilgrimage for Hindus and Sikhs. The epic of Manikaran states that while moving around, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, once found a place that was surrounded by mountains and was dense green.  The place was very beautiful, so they decided to live some time there.  It is said that they actually spent 1100 years here.  When they were staying here, Goddess Parvati lost her mani in the waters of a stream.  Upset with the loss, she asked Lord Shiva to bring it back.  Lord Shiva ordered his attendant to locate the mani for Parvati, but when he failed, Lord Shiva was very angry.
Lord Shiva opened his third eye, a tremendously unfortunate event, which led to trouble in the universe.  A request was made to the serpent god, Shesha-Nag, to pacify Lord Shiva.  Shesha-Nag hissed thereby producing a flow of boiling water. The water spread over the entire area resulting in the emergence of precious stones which Goddess Parvati had lost.  Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati were very happy with this.  So, this place is known as Manikaran.  The name Manikaran is obtain from this legend. The water is still boiling and considered very beneficial and auspicious.  A pilgrimage to this place is thought as absolute.  It is also known that is no need to visit “Kashi” after visiting this place.  The water of the spring is also known to have curative properties.  The water is so hot that even the rice prepared for the “langar” is cooked in this boiling water. According to the Sikhs, during third Udasi, Guru Nanak Dev ji came visited this place in 1574, with his disciples Bhai Bala & Bhai Mardana. Bhai Mardana felt hungry and they had no food.  Guru Nanak sent his good Friend Bhai Mardana to get food for langar.  Many people donated flour to make Roti, but the only problem was that there was no fire to prepare the food. Guru Nanak then asked Mardana to lift a stone and he then lifted a rock and a hot spring appeared.
As directed by Guru Nanak Dev ji, Mardana put the chappatis in the spring, and to his despair the chappatis sank.  Guru Nanak then told him to pray to god that if his chappatis float back, then he would donate one chappati in the name of God.  When he prayed, all the chappatis started floating back and cooked.  Guru Nanak Dev Ji said that anybody who donates in the name of God, his or her drowned items are returned back.
